To do this, gabares were the most widely used means of transport. This type of boat had no trouble navigating these waters thanks to its perfectly flat bottom. By choosing a gabare, you can relive the sensations of the gabariers of old who travelled along the Dordogne River. The history and beauty of this river have earned it a place among UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

The history of gabare use on the Dordogne, from Dordogne to Argentat
to the rhythm of the river
Back then, the gabariers used this boat to transport wood for cooperage and for maritime carpentry as far as Argentat. Other trade goods were also added, such as cheeses from Auvergne and hides from the tanneries of Bort-les-Orgues. As the market evolved, building more gabares became essential. The construction of nearly 400 gabares per year then began around 1860.
The gabariers took great pleasure in drifting downstream with their cargo, while taking care not to damage it. The duration of each trip depended on the weather as well as the weight of the loads. The gabariers were used to selling their gabare when they arrived at their destination. They then had to walk back up the Dordogne to build more, and so on. However, they would buy everyday goods along the way, such as fish and wine, as well as spices.
