The history of the Merle Towers
a fascinating history
Built on a rocky spur at a height of 30 m, the Merle Towers were highly valued by lords because of their position. A toll site, several theories can be put forward to explain the name of these towers.
Legend has it that the site was the domain of the lords of the following places: Merle, Aboy, Carbonnières, Noailles, Pesteils, Saint Bauzile and Veyrac. The first changes to the site took place between the 12th and 15th centuries.
Home to around a hundred peasants in 1350, the site eventually fell into English hands in 1371, and they did not fully relinquish it until the end of the Hundred Years’ War in 1475. The Merle Towers began to be abandoned at the end of the 17th century, before being taken over by villagers at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the towers are a gem of medieval Limousin.
Plenty of sites to visit
lots to explore
The Merle Towers include several areas you can visit over a few days. Here are the main spots to discover on site.
The medieval town
In general, Merle’s medieval town stands out for its 7 great towers, which once belonged to different feudal lords. Built on a rocky spur, this former town sits just above the Maronne River. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1927, this town is one of the witnesses to the history of the commune and of France. On top of that, the splendour of the towers still attracts plenty of interest.
Natural treasures
The Merle Towers have real natural assets. First of all, there’s the Maronne River itself, perfect for wellbeing and relaxation. Then there are the various bat species, such as the Greater Horseshoe Bat and the Grey Long-eared Bat.Read more
Every visitor can appreciate how the staff care for these animals. You’ll also find several species of birds of prey, such as the Red Kite.
Please note that the CEN (Conservatoire d’espèces naturel) does what’s needed to provide support to the people who care for these animals.
The Maronne River
Flowing through the Maronne Valley, this river is a major tributary of the Dordogne despite its name “petite eyge“, or little water. Its shallow bed and calm waters are a great way to spend some time relaxing with the family. The river also passes the famous “Old Bridge”, which formed almost naturally. The river will also take you to the ruins of the mill.
The farm and garden
Built at the foot of the Merle rock, the farm and garden will make you want to come back from time to time. The farm has two levels: the “haut bout” and the “bas bout”. Don’t forget that this place is a perfect habitat for the animals that live here. As for the terraced garden, you’ll certainly enjoy the beauty of the flora and fauna.
The welcome village
The welcome village is known for the splendour of its architecture, even though you’ll find old houses there. It can be reached from departmental road 13. You’ll certainly enjoy the “Maison Madège” and the “Maison Esturgie“. During the day, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the old shop, where you’ll find plenty of things.
Your stay at Camping Soleil d’Oc will be a chance to visit nearby tourist sites such as the Murel waterfalls, the village of Collonges-la-Rouge, the Merle Towers, and more.
A range of varied and attractive rentals are available at the campsite, such as the SAMOA Chalet (3 bedrooms)
