Monks’ canal in Aubazine
An architectural challenge
A piece of history
In the middle of the 12th century, a man named Etienne founded a monastery for men and a monastery for women in Aubazine.
To supply the men’s monastery with water, the monks built a canal on the side of a steep valley, an exceptional work of art and technique, unique in Europe for its design and boldness.
Following every contour of the steep, rocky slope of the Coiroux valley, this canal, which stretches over 1,500m, is a true challenge and bears witness to the monks’ great audacity in bypassing natural obstacles and spanning precipices.
It was built to supply the monastery’s fish pond, irrigate the meadows and gardens, and power three mills. Close to Soleil d’Oc campsite, the Monks’ Canal was built to transport goods from the monastery to the river. It is also known as the “Canal des Moines” and is one of the oldest canals in France, with construction beginning around 1185 AD.
It crosses a valley between two hills and is fed by two streams that flow into it at its eastern end. The canal was used for irrigation and transporting goods to the monastery until the 19th century, when it became obsolete with the advent of the railways.

Aubazine Monks’ Canal: a historic and monastic place
nature reserve
The village of Aubazine, with no more than 1,000 inhabitants, is an exceptional historical and natural reserve.
It is famous for its iconic monks’ canal and its abbey dating back to the 12th century. This canal is full of history, which is why it was listed as a historic monument in the mid-1960s.
However, the monument has undergone restoration as it was weakened by the climate and the passage of thousands of visitors. Currently in good condition since 2010, the canal and the monastery welcome many tourists.
The monks’ canal: ideal for hiking enthusiasts
A perfect circuit
The Aubazine monks’ canal is a place much appreciated by tourists. Both a tourist and sports park, its architecture, setting, and the landscape it offers make up all its charm. This structure was built by the monks of Aubazine Abbey to supply the village and the abbey with water. The Aubazine monks’ canal is 1.7 km long, reflecting the skills of the men of that time.
If you want to spend a holiday in the heart of nature, Aubazine is an ideal destination. Moreover, thanks to the campsites on-site, such as Soleil d’Oc campsite, you can spend wonderful moments, alone or in a group.
In addition, the monks’ canal circuit from Soleil d’Oc campsite offers the possibility of a walk or even a hike, starting from the campsite to the old fish pond, passing along the waters of the Coiroux and the old abbey mill. Indeed, the 1.7 km along the canal is accessible and therefore open to visitors.
However, it is forbidden to walk along the monks’ canal with a dog, bicycle, motorcycle, or stroller. Unfortunately, the site is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
